What is a visitation schedule?

A visitation schedule is a court-ordered plan for when a parent who does not have custody of a child can have visitations with their child. Every state has their own specific laws surrounding visitation, but in Washington, visitation is to be decided according to the child’s best interests. A visitation schedule will usually include the days and times, how long the visitations will be, and other details like who will provide transportation and who will be present during the visitations. Although visitation schedules are typically created with the best interests of the child in mind, it is important to recognize that the visitation schedule is binding. Visitors must adhere to the schedule unless another visitation is agreed upon. When establishing a visitation schedule, the court will consider a number of different factors including the age of the child, the distance between the parents, and the relationship between parent and child. Both parents should strive to reach an agreement on a visitation schedule that serves the child’s best interests. If the parents are unable to reach an agreement, the court may appoint a mediator to help the parties come to a resolution. In the end, the court will be the one to determine the visitation schedule, and it must be followed unless otherwise modified by the court.
