What is supervised visitation?

Supervised visitation refers to arrangements made during custody and visitation disputes in which a custodial parent (or sometimes another adult, such as a grandparent) allows the non-custodial parent to visit with the child only while they are supervised. Supervised visitation is typically reserved for cases in which the courts have determined that it would be in the best interests of the child to have another adult present during the visits between the non-custodial parent and the child. In Texas, supervised visitation may be applied if the court finds that the visitation poses a threat of emotional, physical, or sexual harm to the child or if the court believes the parent’s behavior may impair the child’s emotional development. In some cases, the court may order the non-custodial parent to attend counseling or parenting classes before being allowed to have unsupervised visitation with the child. The purpose of supervised visitation is to ensure that the child’s best interests and safety are protected while allowing the non-custodial parent to still be involved in their child’s life. Visits must be conducted in a safe environment and supervised by an adult who is willing to intervene in an emergency. The visitation supervisor can be a family member, a friend, or a professional supervisor. Supervised visitation can be a beneficial tool for ensuring the safety of the child and facilitating a healthy and positive relationship for the child with their non-custodial parent. However, it should be used only when necessary and can be adjusted as the situation improves.
