What is a domestic violence restraining order?

A Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) is a court order in Florida courts designed to protect victims of domestic violence from further abuse. This order, also sometimes referred to as a “protection order” or an “injunction for protection”, prohibits the abuser from contacting the victim, either through in-person visits, calls, or other messages, and in some cases can even restrict the abuser from entering the victim’s home. The court can then decide whether or not to issue the order. The abuser must also be notified of the filing and be present at the hearing for the DVRO. If a DVRO is granted, the order will specify exactly what the abuser is forbidden from doing (which can include a variety of activities such as stalking, harassing, or threatening or intimidating the victim). The order will also set forth any other restrictions and requirements that are to be followed (such as providing the victim with temporary relocation assistance). Ultimately, a DVRO is an important tool used to protect victims of domestic violence from further abuse.
