What is child abuse?
Child abuse is a type of physical, emotional, or psychological neglect or abuse of a child. In the state of Florida, child abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, and psychological harm or any form of sexual abuse or exploitation. Physical abuse describes any form of nonaccidental physical injury or harm that is inflicted on a child. This includes slapping, hitting, kicking or punching, burning, or shaking the child. It could involve using an object to injure a child, or it could involve the misuse of drugs or alcohol. Emotional abuse is defined as any act of verbal or nonverbal communication that causes psychological harm or distress to a child. This includes belittling, threatening, or making fun of a child. It also includes consistently ignoring, rejecting, or isolating a child. Psychological abuse is defined as any act that causes emotional distress or psychological trauma to a child. This includes exposing a child to extreme stress, terrifying a child, or using manipulation or coercion to control a child’s behavior. Child abuse is a serious crime in the state of Florida, and the repercussions for the abuser can be severe. If you suspect that a child is being abused, you should immediately report it to the Department of Children and Families (DCF) or the Florida Abuse Hotline. If you have been accused of child abuse, you should immediately contact a lawyer to discuss your legal options.
