How does a federal criminal investigation work?

A federal criminal investigation is the process of gathering evidence to determine if a person has committed a crime that violates federal law. In Minnesota, federal criminal investigations are handled by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). The FBI will conduct a thorough investigation that typically involves interviewing witnesses, gathering physical evidence, and researching the suspect’s personal and professional history. The FBI also has the ability to bring in additional resources, such as forensic scientists or federal law enforcement agents, to help with the investigation if needed. During the investigation, the FBI will work to build a case against the suspect. If evidence indicates that a federal crime has been committed, then charges may be brought against the suspect. If charges are brought, then the suspect will be arraigned in a federal court. Depending on the severity of the crime, the suspect may be required to appear in court multiple times before a decision is reached. At any point in the investigation, the FBI can seek assistance from state or local law enforcement, or request search warrants or subpoenas to gain access to records or other evidence that could be important to the case. In some cases, the FBI will work closely with local or state law enforcement to build a case against a suspect. In this case, the local law enforcement would bring their case to a federal prosecutor. The federal prosecutor then would decide whether to bring the case before a federal court. The federal criminal investigation process can be complex and lengthy, but it is designed to ensure that all evidence is reviewed and that justice is served.
