What is Fair Housing Law?

Fair Housing Law is a set of laws in Illinois that protect people from discrimination when looking for housing. This law applies to rental, sale, financing, home insurance, zoning, and any other housing-related transactions. It ensures that all people within a certain jurisdiction are treated fairly and equally when looking for housing. Fair Housing Law prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability. Discriminatory actions include refusing to rent, sell, or lease housing; setting different terms and conditions; providing different levels of services; or falsely denying that housing is available. Fair Housing Law also covers the advertising of housing related transactions. It is illegal to advertise with discriminatory language or to represent that a certain type of person would be unwelcome in renting a unit or finding housing based on any of the protected characteristics. By protecting people from discrimination when it comes to housing, Fair Housing Law ensures that people have equal access to housing opportunities. Without this law, people could be unfairly excluded from finding a place to live, making it difficult, or impossible, for them to access basic services and amenities.
