What are the protected classes under Fair Housing Law?

The Fair Housing Law in Texas protects people in certain classes from housing discrimination. These classes are referred to as protected classes. The Fair Housing Law provides protection from discrimination for people based on their: race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, and familial status. Race includes all types of people, regardless of the color of their skin. This includes Native Americans, Asians, African Americans, and Caucasians. Color includes all colors, whether light or dark. National origin applies to any individual regardless of their heritage or country of origin. It includes immigrants as well as people who are considered “American.” Sex applies to any individual regardless of their gender or gender identity. This includes transgender, intersex, and non-binary individuals. Disability applies to any physical or mental impairment that can affect a person’s activities of daily living, and includes both visible and invisible disabilities. Religion applies to any individual regardless of their faith or lack thereof, including atheists. Familial status applies to families with children under 18, and households with pregnant women, foster children, or adopted children. These classes are covered by the Fair Housing Law in Texas, and are protected from discrimination. All individuals should be treated fairly and with respect regardless of their race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, or familial status.
