What are the filing fees for complaints about a violation of Fair Housing Law?

When a complaint is filed with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) for a violation of Fair Housing Law, there are filing fees that must be paid. The filing fees are determined by the type of complaint that is filed. For housing discrimination complaints, the filing fee is $50 if the respondent is an individual, and $200 if the respondent is a business, or a governmental entity. The fee must be paid at the time of filing. Payment can be made by check or money order, made out to the MCAD. For sexual harassment complaints, the filing fee is $100. This fee also must be paid at the time of filing, and can also be paid by check or money order, made out to the MCAD. For age discrimination complaints, the filing fee is $50. Again, this fee is due at the time of filing, and can be paid by check or money order, made out to the MCAD. If the filing fee presents a financial hardship to the complainant, the fee may be waived by the MCAD. Requests for a fee waiver must be made in writing, and accompanied by proof of financial hardship. It is important to note that the filing fees are separate from any other costs associated with filing a complaint. The filing fees are nonrefundable, and must be paid regardless of the outcome of the complaint.
