What are the filing fees for complaints about a violation of Fair Housing Law?

Complaints about a violation of Michigan’s Fair Housing Law are filed with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) and must include a filing fee. The amount of the filing fee depends upon the basis of the claim and the number of units owned or controlled by the alleged violator. For cases with an individual or family basis, such as race, national origin, religion, sex, age, familial status, height, weight, and marital status, the filing fee is based on the number of units owned or controlled. If there is only one unit, the filing fee is $50. For two to four units, the filing fee is $125, and for five or more units the filing fee is $500. For cases with a housing industry basis, such as advertising, constructions, financing, and related activities, the filing fee is a flat $500 regardless of the number of units involved. The filing fee covers the cost of processing, hearing, and adjudicating the claim, and is not refundable, even if the case is dismissed. The fee should be submitted to the MDCR with the written complaint. If you believe you have been the victim of discrimination, you are encouraged to file a complaint with the MDCR. They are the agency responsible for enforcing Michigan’s Fair Housing Law and will investigate any claims of discrimination.
