What are the filing fees for complaints about a violation of Fair Housing Law?
In New Hampshire, filing a complaint about a possible violation of Fair Housing Law is free. The New Hampshire Human Rights Commission (NH HRC) and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) both investigate claims of discrimination in housing across the state, each with their own process and set of fees. The NH HRC accepts complaints about discrimination in housing, public accommodations, and employment throughout the state. No filing fee is required in order to register a complaint of discrimination against a landlord, apartment complex owner, or other individual. HUD investigates housing discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, and familial status. To file a complaint with HUD, there is a processing fee of $25. However, individuals living in or below the poverty line may be exempt from this fee. It is important to note that filing a complaint of housing discrimination is only the first step in the process. In either case, a thorough investigation will follow the filing of the complaint, during which additional fees may need to be paid. After the investigation is complete, a final decision may be issued. Depending on the outcome, legal action may be taken if necessary.
