What are the foreclosure timelines in my state?

In Florida, foreclosures are typically completed within a few months, depending on the specifics of the situation. The foreclosure process begins when a homeowner has missed at least three payments and the lender serves the homeowner with a Notice of Default. At this point, the homeowner has around 45 days to catch up on their payments. After the 45 days, the lender may issue a Notice of Sale, which is publicly posted. This Notice of Sale must be posted at least 20 days prior to the actual sale. On the day of the foreclosure sale, the property is auctioned off to the highest bidder. If there is no other bidder, then the lender may take back the property. The homeowner then has up to 12 days to redeem the property. After the 12 days, the new owner can file a Certificate of Title with the Clerk of Court. In the event that the homeowner does not redeem the property within the 12-day period, the lender may file a Motion for a Final Judgment of Foreclosure with the court. The foreclosure is finalized after the court enters the final judgment. In all, the foreclosure process can take anywhere from 2-4 months, depending on the situation. Homeowners should take this timeline into consideration if they are facing foreclosure, as the process moves quickly and they should be prepared.
