Is there any financial assistance available to grandparents raising their grandchildren?
Yes, there is financial assistance available to grandparents raising their grandchildren in South Dakota. Thanks to the Grandparents Rights Law, approved in 2014 under the Safe Haven for Grandparents and Kinship Caregivers Act, grandparents who are caring for grandchildren in South Dakota may be eligible for a variety of financial assistance. First, the state of South Dakota created the Grandparents as Caregivers Program which provides various support services, such as respite care and information and referral services for grandparents raising grandchildren. These services are designed to alleviate the stress of parenting and provide both emotional and financial support. Additionally, grandparents raising grandchildren may be eligible for Medicaid if they meet the financial and other requirements of the state. The program includes both medical and some dental coverage, as well as nursing home care and other long-term care services. Finally, grandparents may be eligible for financial assistance from the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, as well as for cash assistance from Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In short, the state of South Dakota does offer financial assistance to grandparents raising their grandchildren. To learn more, contact your local Social Services Department.
