Is there a time limit on how long a grandparent can have visitation with a grandchild?
In Washington, there is no set time limit for grandparent visitation rights. According to Washington state law, grandparents can petition the court for visitation rights with a grandchild. In order to do so, the grandparent must show there is a significant and ongoing relationship between the grandchild and grandparent and that visitation is in the best interest of the child. The court may grant visitation rights to the grandparent, although the exact amount of visitation time is left to the discretion of the court. The court will take into consideration the nature of the relationship between the grandparent and grandchild, the location of each party, and any other factors that may affect the grandparent’s ability to have visitation with the grandchild. For example, economic concerns, conflicting schedules, a parent’s objections, or other factors affecting the relationship between the grandparent and grandchild can all impact the amount of visitation granted. In any case, neither the grandparents nor the grandchild is legally entitled to a guaranteed visitation period. Visitation arrangements are determined on a case-by-case basis by the court, and the court may modify or terminate visitation rights if it is in the best interests of the child. Therefore, it is important for grandparents who desire visitation rights to petition the court for visitation rights and ensure that their relationship with their grandchild is maintained.
