Does a grandparent have the right to be notified if their grandchild is being put into adoption?

In Oregon, grandparents have legal rights in certain circumstances. According to Oregon law, grandparents have the right to be notified if their grandchild is being put into adoption. This notification is necessary to allow the grandparents to exercise their rights to participate in court hearings concerning the adoption. Under Oregon Statutes, the grandparents must be notified of any proceeding concerning adoption of their grandchild only if the adoption is not being done through a licensed adoption agency or through a public child-caring agency. Additionally, the grandparents need to be notified if the grandchild is 12 years of age or older, or if the grandchild has resided with the grandparents or their parent in Oregon for at least 6 months of the 12 months preceding the filing of the adoption petition. In such circumstances, the court will require the adoptive parents to notify the appropriate grandparent of the adoption proceedings. The adoptive parents are also required to provide the grandparent with information that is relevant to the adoption process, such as the adoption petition, the date on which the adoption petition was filed, and the date of any hearings concerning the adoption. Although it is not required by law, many adoptive parents choose to include the grandparent in the adoption process. This could include sending the grandparent invitations to the adoption hearing or allowing them to be present during the adoption process. Ultimately, the decision about how the grandparent is involved rests with the adoptive parents.
