Can grandparents be held financially responsible for their grandchild’s medical bills?

In South Dakota, grandparents are not responsible for their grandchild’s medical bills. According to the Grandparents Rights Law of South Dakota, grandparents are only responsible for providing emotional and financial support to their grandchildren when the court orders such support. If the court does not order such support, then grandparents are not held financially responsible for their grandchild’s medical bills. The grandparent’s rights law in South Dakota does not specify the legal responsibilities of grandparents when it comes to providing financial assistance for their grandchild’s medical costs. If grandparents wish to provide such assistance, they must do so voluntarily and not at the expense of other family members. If the grandchild’s parent is not able to pay for medical expenses, then the grandparents may choose to help out financially. This must be done without a court order, however. Grandparents rights laws in South Dakota are intended to protect the rights of grandparents and to ensure that they are respected as members of the family. Courts may consider the financial or emotional contributions made by grandparents in order to determine whether or not they should be held responsible for their grandchild’s medical bills. Ultimately, however, it is up to the grandparent’s discretion as to whether or not they are willing and able to provide such assistance.
