Does a grandparent have the right to attend their grandchild’s school activities?
In California, a grandparent does have certain rights to attend their grandchild’s school activities. According to California’s Grandparents Rights Law, grandparents who have a close and substantial relationship with a grandchild may visit the school and take part in the grandchild’s school activities, if the grandchild’s parent agrees. Grandparents who are not part of the grandchild’s everyday life, however, may only attend school activities if they have a court order allowing them to do so. Schools are generally open to allowing grandparents to participate in their grandchild’s school activities. However, some schools may impose restrictions. For instance, some schools may require that grandparents be accompanied by the grandchild’s parent or another adult and must appear on the school’s list of approved visitors. Grandparents in California should contact their grandchild’s school for their specific policies regarding attendance at school activities. If the child’s parent does not agree with the grandparent attending the school activity, the grandparent may need to follow the procedures outlined in California’s Grandparents Rights Law. This includes filing a petition for visitation rights in court and obtaining a court order to allow for attendance at the grandchild’s school activities.
