What is a court?

A court is a legal institution that hears and determines disputes between parties. In Delaware, courts are divided into two categories, state courts and federal courts. State courts in Delaware consist of Family Court, which handles issues involving family matters such as divorces, child custody and support, and the Court of Common Pleas, which hears civil cases involving disputes over money and property. The Superior Court of Delaware is the higher court in the state and hears appeals from the lower courts. Federal courts in Delaware include the U.S. District Court, which hears cases involving federal laws, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, which hears appeals from the District Court. All courts in Delaware are overseen by the Delaware Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the state and hears appeals from the lower courts. Courts are important components of the judicial system because they provide a forum where legal matters can be determined fair and justly. Parties who bring their case to court must present their evidence before a judge and/or jury, who assess the facts and evidence to determine the outcome of the case. Each court is governed by its own set of rules and procedures to ensure fairness for all parties involved.
