What is a court?

A court is a place where people can go to have their legal disputes heard and decided upon by a judge. In Louisiana, there are two levels of courts – the district courts and the state courts. Each court is made up of judges who make decisions based on the law. In the district courts, cases are heard and decided upon at a local level. These courts are responsible for such criminal cases as traffic violations, misdemeanors, and felony charges. They also hear civil cases, such as divorce, child custody, and landlord-tenant disputes. In the state courts, cases involving more serious charges are heard. These include felony crimes, cases dealing with the constitutionality of laws, and appeals from decisions made in district courts. The Louisiana Supreme Court is the highest court in the state and is responsible for reviewing appeals from lower courts. Lawyers represent both sides in a case and present evidence to the judge in order to persuade them of their argument. The judge is responsible for researching the case and interpreting the law in order to make a ruling that is in line with the law. After a decision is made, both parties have the right to appeal the decision if they don’t agree with it. Going to court in Louisiana is an important legal process in which people can have their legal disputes resolved.
