What is a court?

A court is a place in which disputes between two parties are heard and judged by a neutral third party, typically a judge. In Texas, a court is a system of Justice of the Peace Courts, also known as JP Courts, and County Courts, and/or District Courts. These courts handle a variety of civil, criminal, family, and juvenile cases. In Texas, Justice of the Peace Courts are the lowest level courts. These courts hear matters involving small claims, evictions, misdemeanors, and violations of state law. These courts are presided over by a Justice of the Peace. County Courts and District Courts are the next level of courts in Texas. County Courts typically hear matters such as civil cases, unfair debt collections, and certain juvenile cases. County Courts are presided over by a Judge of the County Court or a District Judge. District Courts are the highest level of trial courts in Texas. These courts hear matters involving felony criminal cases, family law, and other matters. District Courts are presided over by a District Judge, Chief Justice, or a Justice of the Supreme Court. All court proceedings in Texas are conducted in accordance with the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, the Texas Rules of Criminal Procedure, and the Texas Rules of Evidence. Furthermore, all proceedings must be conducted fairly and with due process of law. Ultimately, the court is responsible for deciding disputes between two parties and ensuring that justice is served.
