What is a jury selection process?

A jury selection process is the process by which jurors are chosen to hear a case in court. In Nebraska, all civil and criminal trials are heard by a jury. Jury selection is an important process that ensures that the jury members are fair, impartial, and able to render a proper verdict. The first step of a jury selection process is for the judge and both parties’ attorneys to question potential jurors to determine whether they are qualified to serve. During this process, the attorneys can ask questions that will help them determine whether the juror is biased and should be removed. When the questioning is completed, the judge will dismiss any juror that is not fit to serve. Next, both parties’ attorneys can use their allotted number of “preemptory challenges” to strike any juror they feel is not suitable, even when that person is qualified. Finally, the court administrator will draw the names of the individuals who have been selected to serve on the jury. Once the jury has been selected, the trial can proceed. It is important to have a thorough jury selection process so that the jury is able to properly evaluate the evidence and decide the case fairly. That is why jury selection is such an important part of the legal process.
