What is a jury selection process?

A jury selection process is the process by which a jury is chosen for a trial in Pennsylvania. This process begins with a pool of potential jurors known as a jury pool. The judge and attorneys for both sides will then question the jurors in the jury pool to determine their suitability for the case. They may inquire about any prior knowledge of the case, any past legal experience, any possible biases or prejudices, and anything else that may affect their ability to serve as an impartial juror. Once a pool of eligible jurors has been established, the actual selection of the jury will begin. In most cases, each side will have an opportunity to dismiss a certain number of jurors for any reason. This is called a peremptory strike, and is done without giving any reason. After the peremptory strikes, the remaining jurors will be placed in a jury box and sworn in. The judge will then ask the jurors to answer a few general questions, such as whether they understand their role as a juror, before the trial begins. Once the jury has been sworn in, they are then charged with reaching a verdict based solely on the evidence presented in court, as well as their own personal understandings of the laws and regulations that apply to the case. The jurors may deliberate together and arrive at a verdict as a group, or they may choose to do so individually.
