What is a jury selection process?
The jury selection process in Texas is the process of selecting individuals to serve on a jury. It is an important part of the criminal justice system, as the jury plays a major role in the trial and verdict. The process of jury selection begins with the summoning of persons from the community to fill the jury pool. These persons are usually selected at random from voter registration or driver license records. Then, the potential jurors are asked to complete a questionnaire that allows the court and lawyers to review the potential jurors and determine if any may have a bias or reason to be excluded from the jury. During the selection process, the court and lawyers can then ask potential jurors questions to assess their knowledge of the case and their ability to make unbiased decisions. After each side has had an opportunity to question jurors, jurors may be challenged by either side, and can be excluded from the jury for a variety of reasons. At the end of the jury selection process, twelve jurors, plus some alternate jurors, are selected randomly from the potential jurors to serve on the jury. Selection of the jurors is very important, as the jurors will play a large role in the outcome of the trial.
