What are the different types of guardianship?

In Ohio, there are three main types of guardianship: plenary guardianship, limited guardianship, and temporary guardianship. A plenary guardian is someone who is appointed by the court to manage a person’s assets and has the same rights and obligations that a parent would have. Plenary guardians have control over all decisions such as healthcare, school, residence, etc. This type of guardianship is permanent and cannot be revoked unless in certain circumstances by the court. Limited guardianship is when a guardian only has limited authority over the person or property of the individual who is being protected. It may be granted to the guardian for a specific purpose such as preventing a person from entering into a financial contract or making medical decisions related to the protected person. Finally, temporary guardianship is when an individual is appointed to serve as a temporary guardian for a limited period of time. This type of guardianship can be initiated by either the court or the parents of the individual being protected. This type of guardianship is especially useful if a parent has to be away for a long period of time, but wants a trusted person to make decisions on behalf of their child. In Ohio, the court takes into consideration all of the types of guardianship when determining the best way to protect the welfare of an individual. It is important to consult a lawyer to understand the legal rights and implications of each type of guardianship.
