What are the legal rights of health care providers?

In Maryland, health care providers, such as physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, have certain legal rights stemming from both state and federal laws. These rights include the right to prescribe medications, treat patients, and provide other health-related services. Health care providers also have a right to privacy. Under HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and Maryland state laws, health care providers’ conversations with patients and their medical information must remain confidential. Health care providers also have the right to refuse a patient’s request for medical treatment. This right is based on the concept of informed consent and should be exercised if the treatment was not requested in good faith or if the provider believes the request is not in the best interests of the patient. Additionally, healthcare providers have certain rights when it comes to collecting payments for services rendered. They are able to collect fees for services in a timely manner and without having to resort to legal action. Finally, health care providers have a right to be free from interference or discrimination in regards to administering health care services. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, health care providers cannot discriminate against a patient based on disability and must provide access to services and appropriate accommodation.
