What is the law on disability rights?
Washington State’s disability rights laws are intended to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The Washington State Law Against Discrimination (WLAD) prohibits discrimination based on a person’s disability status, as well as other characteristics such as race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that prohibits discrimination based on disability in areas such as employment, government services, public accommodations, and transportation. The ADA requires that employers provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities and prohibits employers from treating a potential or current employee differently based on his or her disability. The Fair Housing Act (FHA) is another federal law that helps protect people with disabilities. It requires landlords and property owners to make reasonable accommodations that allow people with disabilities to fully enjoy their housing, as long as it does not impose an undue financial burden on the landlord. For example, a landlord with a no-pets policy might be required to make an exception for a tenant with a service animal. Finally, Washington State’s Technology Access Act (TAA) helps ensure that people with disabilities can access websites, mobile applications, and other digital products. The TAA requires that websites, software, and other products meet certain accessibility standards so that people with disabilities can use them. In summary, Washington State has a variety of laws that protect the rights of people with disabilities. These laws help ensure that people with disabilities can access the same opportunities as everyone else and that they are treated fairly in the workplace and in their housing.
