Who is eligible for health insurance?

In Washington, people who are eligible for health insurance come from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances. Generally, anyone who is a resident of Washington can apply for health insurance through the Washington State Health Benefit Exchange. People who are eligible for health insurance through the exchange must meet certain requirements, such as: having an income at or below 133% of the Federal Poverty Level, meeting citizenship or immigration requirements, or being identified as a “child in foster care” or a “displaced homemaker.” People who qualify for Medicare, Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) may also be eligible for health insurance in Washington. Those with pre-existing conditions, as well as pregnant women, are also considered eligible for health insurance coverage. Employer-sponsored health insurance plans may also be available to employees in Washington. The employer must cooperate with the exchange in order for the employee to be eligible for the health coverage. Finally, some people who are not eligible for health insurance through their employer or the Exchange may still be eligible for other forms of coverage. For instance, individuals or families who qualify for a hardship exemption or deemed eligible for a “catastrophic” health plan may be able to receive health insurance coverage. To find out if you are eligible for health insurance in Washington, contact the Washington State Health Benefit Exchange. They can provide more information regarding eligibility and available plans.
