What is an open enrollment period?

Open enrollment period is the period of time usually once a year when individuals can purchase health insurance or change their current coverage plan. During open enrollment period, individuals are able to review their current insurance coverage and compare it with other plans to make sure they have the coverage they need. In Hawaii, open enrollment typically runs from October 1st to November 1st. During that time, individuals can compare plans, apply for coverage, and make any changes to their insurance coverage. The changes made during open enrollment period will take effect on January 1st of the following year. It’s important to understand that during open enrollment, individuals are able to sign up for or change health insurance plans, but they cannot make any changes to their existing coverage. For example, if an individual had coverage through an employer in one year and wishes to switch to an individual plan, they must do so during open enrollment. Open enrollment is also an important time for employers. When employers offer insurance plans, they must give employees the opportunity to sign up for coverage during the annual open enrollment period. Employers must also inform their employees of the open enrollment period and any changes that may be made to the insurance coverage.
