What is an out-of-network provider?

An out-of-network provider in Texas is a health care provider that does not have a contract with the health insurance company for services. Out-of-network providers may include doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and other providers. People are usually free to choose any provider they wish, however, out-of-network providers may not be covered by the health insurance company. This means that you may have to pay more money for the services you require if you choose an out-of-network provider. In Texas, all health plans must provide certain healthcare services, so regardless of whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network provider, you should still be able to receive the health care services you need. However, if you choose an out-of-network provider, you may be responsible for higher costs than if you were to choose an in-network provider. If you are considering an out-of-network provider, take the time to look at your plan’s coverage. Read and understand your plan’s coverage for out-of-network providers to make sure you understand what costs you may be responsible for. Additionally, take the time to compare costs of the services you need with both in-network and out-of-network providers to make sure you are getting the best deal for yourself and your family.
