What is a catastrophic plan?

A catastrophic plan is a type of health insurance offered in Hawaii that provides basic coverage at a relatively lower cost than other types of health insurance plans. The plan is designed to help people who do not have the income or resources to purchase more comprehensive health insurance coverage. In Hawaii, catastrophic plans cover preventive services such as immunizations and screenings at 100%. Additionally, they only cover three primary care visits per year at a reduced cost. The main purpose of a catastrophic plan is to protect people from high medical costs in the event of a serious illness or injury that requires extensive medical care. Catastrophic plans usually have very high deductibles, meaning the policyholder must pay a certain amount out-of-pocket before the insurance kicks in. However, the premiums for these plans tend to be lower than those of other types of health insurance plans. The catastrophic plan also includes essential health benefits such as emergency services, prescription drugs, mental health services, and hospitalization. In Hawaii, catastrophic plans are only available to individuals under age 30 who cannot afford other types of health insurance. However, some individuals over age 30 may be eligible if they meet certain criteria. Catastrophic plans are an affordable option for those who cannot obtain traditional health insurance and are in need of basic medical coverage.
