What is a qualified health plan (QHP)?

A qualified health plan (QHP) is a type of health insurance plan that meets certain requirements set by the state of Arizona and the federal government. These plans are offered through the Marketplace, also known as the health insurance exchange, and must offer essential health benefits. Essential health benefits are those services that foster wellness, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of physical and mental health conditions. These benefits include preventive care, doctor’s visits, mental health care, hospital stays, prescription drugs, laboratory tests, and other similar services. QHPs must comply with a variety of rules to be considered a qualified health plan, such as providing a certain level of coverage, having an adequate network of providers, offering essential health benefits, having reasonable premium costs, and other requirements. The costs associated with QHPs may or may not be covered by subsidies depending on a person’s income and other factors. In Arizona, there are two insurers offering QHPs: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and Health Net. If you’re looking for a health insurance plan, you must choose a QHP that meets the requirements set by Arizona and the federal government. If you don’t, you may be subject to penalties or tax implications.
