What is the required notice period for HOA meetings?
In California, homeowners associations (HOAs) must inform their members of board meetings at least four days in advance of the meeting. The HOA must include the date, time and location of the meeting in the notice. If the location of the meeting is changed, the HOA must provide an additional two days notice, in writing, of the new meeting location. The notice must be sent to each homeowner in one of three ways: (1) by mail or email; (2) by posting it in a conspicuous place on the property; or (3) by posting it in the association’s official bulletin board. If the association has an official website, the notice of the meeting must be posted there at least four days prior to the meeting. Every year, the HOA must provide a written notice of its annual meeting to all members at least 30 days before the meeting. The notice for an annual meeting must include the time and place of the meeting, and must specify the purpose of the meeting. At least five days before the annual meeting, the HOA must also mail out a current list of the board members and their contact information. Thus, the required notice period for an HOA meeting in California is at least four days. For an annual meeting, the notice period is at least 30 days.
