What are the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a document that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. It includes a number of fundamental human rights that all individuals are entitled to, regardless of their culture, religion, or country. It also serves as an international legal standard for recognizing and protecting basic human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights contains 30 articles that describe the rights that all people are entitled to. These rights include the right to life, liberty, and security of person; freedom from discrimination; the right to marry and own property; the right to an education; freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; the right to work and receive a fair wage; and the right to equal access to public services. Additionally, the Declaration states that no one should be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. It emphasizes the need for international cooperation in recognizing, protecting, and promoting human rights. In Colorado, human rights law is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Colorado Human Rights Commission enforces laws that protect people from discrimination based on their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, creed, marital status, age, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, or veteran status. The Colorado Human Rights Act has been in place since 1963 and provides broad protection for human rights in the state.
