What are the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, or UDHR, is an international agreement that details the rights and freedoms that each human being deserves. It was adopted by the United Nations on December 10th, 1948 and is widely regarded as a milestone in human rights law. The declaration sets out 30 rights that all human beings should enjoy, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. The UDHR covers a wide range of areas, including civil and political rights, rights to a fair trial, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom of opinion and expression, freedom from torture and cruel and inhumane treatment, racial discrimination, rights to privacy, rights of the child, rights of marriage and family, and more. Michigan also has laws that protect freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and the protection of cultural heritage.
