How do countries ensure that human rights are respected?
The protection of human rights is an issue that is taken very seriously by countries across the globe. In Indiana, the legal framework that exists to ensure the protection of human rights is human rights law. This type of law works to protect people from having their rights violated, and thereby ensures that those rights are respected. Under human rights law, individuals are guaranteed certain basic rights such as the right to life, liberty, security, education, and freedom from discrimination. In Indiana, State and Federal law both work together to uphold these rights. For example, the Indiana Civil Rights Law (ICRL) protects citizens from discrimination based on race, sex, and religion. At the federal level, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 addresses a broader range of issues, including prohibiting discrimination in employment. In addition, countries have signed international treaties that promote the protection of human rights. An example of this is the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is an international agreement that sets out standards for the protection of children’s rights. By signing this convention, countries agree to defend these standards, and to create laws that protect them. The efforts of countries to protect and ensure respect for human rights are essential for creating a safe and just society. By upholding these laws, countries are guaranteeing the safety of their citizens, as well as the rights of individuals everywhere.
