What is the Convention on the Rights of the Child?
The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international human rights treaty that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. It sets out the rights of every child, regardless of their race, religion, or abilities, to ensure their safety and protection. This Convention is the first legally-binding international agreement to recognize the rights of children. In Colorado, the state recognizes the CRC and its provisions. This means each child in Colorado is protected under the Convention and their rights are recognized. According to the Convention, each child is entitled to a variety of rights, including the right to an education, the right to health care, the right to be protected from violence and exploitation, and the right to leisure and play. The CRC also includes provisions which ensure that children’s opinions are considered in legal proceedings and decisions that may affect them. This means that children should have a say in matters such as decisions about adoption, health care, and education. It also ensures that their opinions cannot be disregarded by adults who might make decisions about them. In addition, the CRC covers areas such as the protection of children from child labor, the protection of child refugees and migrant children, and the promotion of children’s understanding of their rights. It establishes the principle that all children have the right to protection, care, and education, no matter where they live.
