What is the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide?
The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide is an international human rights law that was passed in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly. The law was created in the wake of the horrors of World War II, and is intended to prevent and punish the crime of genocide around the world. Under the convention, genocide is defined as any of five acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. These five acts are killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to group members; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction; imposing measures to prevent births within the group; and forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide is part of the international human rights law in Florida. In addition to condemning genocide, the state of Florida has also taken steps to prevent it from occurring within its borders. This includes organizations that focus on human rights education and providing support to victims of human rights abuses, as well as legislation that criminalizes genocide and protects victims from discrimination and persecution. With the help of such measures, Florida is striving to ensure that the human rights of humans are upheld and honored everywhere, including in its own backyard.
