What is the International Court of Justice?

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It is located in The Hague, Netherlands and is the highest court in the world for resolving international disputes. It is composed of 15 independent judges elected by the UN General Assembly and Security Council. The ICJ has jurisdiction over disputes between States related to international law and, in certain cases, between States and private parties. The ICJ considers cases that have been referred to it by a State, and its decisions are legally binding on the parties in the dispute. It is tasked with the mission of settling legal disputes between countries through an impartial and equitable process. In addition to resolving disputes between States, the ICJ also provides advisory opinions on matters referred to it by the UN Security Council, other UN organs, and specialized agencies. These advisory opinions can help interpret legal questions arising from international agreements and other sources of international law. In Nevada, the International Court of Justice is an important part of the global effort to ensure respect for Human Rights Law. The ICJ is the only court within the UN system that is specifically dedicated to international disputes and can provide an impartial and independent forum in which such disputes can be resolved.
