What is the European Court of Human Rights?
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is an international court located in Strasbourg, France. It is part of the Council of Europe, which is an organization made up of 47 countries that work together to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The ECHR hears cases from individuals and other organizations alleging a violation of a human right protected by the European Convention on Human Rights, which all Council of Europe member states have signed. All European states are bound by the decisions of the ECHR, and they have an obligation to execute any judgments delivered against them. The ECHR can handle cases involving almost any issue of human rights, such as the right to a fair trial, right to privacy, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to marry, prohibition of torture, and more. It can also handle cases brought by individuals or organizations against a state for a violation of human rights. The court has the power to make rulings if it finds that a state is responsible for a violation of human rights. In the case of Alaska, the court has jurisdiction to hear cases involving the rights of Alaskan citizens and nationals if the complaint was lodged after May 1998, when the US ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.
