What is the right to health?

The right to health is a basic human right that is protected under Michigan law. This right includes access to healthcare and the ability to pursue good health and wellbeing. It includes the right to medical care, essential medicines and vaccines, healthy working conditions, adequate nutrition and access to safe water and sanitation. At a state level, Michigan has laws and regulations in place to ensure that all individuals have access to health services, including mental health care. All individuals, regardless of income, disability, gender, age, race, and other factors, are covered by Michigan’s Health Code, which includes provisions on mandatory vaccinations, health care provider standards, and the Right to Choose a Health Care Facility Act. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services runs several programs, such as Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Healthy Michigan, which provide assistance to those in need. At the federal level, the United States Constitution guarantees the right to health care as part of the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Affordable Care Act, passed in 2010, has further extended health care rights to include people with pre-existing conditions and those under 26 years old, who can remain on their parents’ plans. Thus, Americans have the right to access medical care and pursue good health and wellbeing in Michigan, both guaranteed by the US Constitution and the state’s health regulations.
