What is an insurance claim?
An insurance claim is a request for payment from an insurance company. It is usually made by an insured individual, business, or organization who has sustained a loss and is seeking to have the insurance company cover the cost of repairs or compensation for the loss. In North Carolina, insurance claims are regulated by the North Carolina Department of Insurance which provides oversight for all lines of insurance including auto, property, and life. When making an insurance claim, policyholders must provide documentation about the loss, including an itemized list of damages, estimates for repair costs, and any applicable receipts. The insurance company will review the claim and if approved, will pay the policyholder for their losses according to the conditions set forth in the policy. Insurance companies may also request photos or additional documentation to help verify the claim. Policyholders should keep in mind that insurance companies are not legally required to pay any claim, but must still provide a reason for denial if an insurance claim is rejected. If a policyholder believes that their insurance company has wrongfully denied their claim, they may pursue additional claims in civil court. In North Carolina, policyholders can also contact the North Carolina Department of Insurance for assistance with filing a complaint against an insurance company.
