What is an independent adjuster?
An independent adjuster is an individual who is employed by an insurance company to investigate and assess claims made by the policyholder. In North Carolina, these adjusters are licensed and certified by the North Carolina Department of Insurance. The adjuster’s job is to review the claim, assess the damage, and inspect the policyholder’s property to determine the cause of the loss. They are responsible for gathering all the facts necessary for the insurance company to make a payment decision. Adjusters are also responsible for communicating with the policyholder throughout the claims process, making sure that the policyholder receives an accurate and fair settlement. The adjuster is independent from the insurance company, which means that they are working for the policyholder’s best interests and are obligated to provide an unbiased and objective assessment of the claim. This is why it is important that the adjuster is certified in North Carolina; the licensing shows that the adjuster is qualified to do the work of understanding the policy, the cause of the damage, and the policyholder’s coverage. An independent adjuster’s role is critical in the insurance claims process, and it is important for both the policyholder and the insurance company that a qualified and licensed adjuster is managing the claim.
