What is an insurance policy endorsement?

An insurance policy endorsement is an amendment to an existing insurance policy that adds or changes benefits or coverage limits. An endorsement can also be used to add a particular person or type of property to the policy. In Hawaii, insurance policy endorsements are used to conform to the Hawaii Insurance Code, as well as to an individual’s specific situation. For example, if the insured wants higher liability coverage than what the policy provides, an endorsement can be used to increase the policy limits. Endorsements can also be used to exclude types of coverage or people from the policy. For example, an endorsement may be used to exclude coverage for a particular type of property or exclude coverage for an employee. When purchasing an insurance policy in Hawaii, individuals should be aware of the endorsements their policy contains and how they affect the coverage. Endorsements can have a wide range of implications and should be read carefully. The Insurance Division of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs is available to help explain the details of any policy endorsement.
