What is an act of God exclusion?
An “act of God exclusion” is a type of provision in an insurance policy that limits coverage for certain types of damages caused by natural forces such as floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. The purpose of such an exclusion is to protect the insurance company from having to pay out money for losses that are outside of its control. In Hawaii, an act of God exclusion is often found in property and casualty insurance policies. In other words, an act of God exclusion provides that certain damages are not covered by the insurance policy, even if the property owner has the required coverage. For example, if a hurricane destroys a home in Hawaii, the homeowner’s insurance policy may exclude coverage for the damages caused by the hurricane, due to the act of God exclusion. Unfortunately, this means that the homeowner is responsible for any resulting losses, including the costs of rebuilding the home. In Hawaii, many insurance companies strongly recommend that property owners review their policies and confirm that they have the right type and amount of insurance coverage to protect them in the event of a natural disaster. It is important for property owners to understand any act of God exclusions that are part of their policy, as well as any other relevant insurance law in the state.
