What is a hedge fund?

A hedge fund is an investment fund that pools money from multiple investors to invest in a variety of assets, such as stocks, bonds, commodities and derivatives. Hedge funds are often used as a way to reduce risk by investing in a diversified portfolio. Hedge funds are typically managed by an investment adviser or a group of professional managers. Hedge funds are often subject to less regulation than other types of investments and have higher fees associated with them. Hedge funds are often used to help protect investors from large losses, by “hedging” their bets. The idea is to spread the risk among different types of investments so that if one asset fails, the other assets will help protect the investor from a complete loss. Some hedge funds also use strategies such as engaging in “short selling”, which involves borrowing and selling a security and then buying it back at a lower price. In California, hedge funds are regulated by the California Department of Business Oversight in order to protect investors from fraud and other financial crimes. The Department of Business Oversight monitors hedge funds for compliance with state and federal securities laws, offers educational resources for investors and provides information to potential investors against fraud. It is important for California investors to be aware of the risks involved with investing in hedge funds and to always do their due diligence before investing.
