What are the consequences of investment fraud?
Investment fraud is a serious crime that, if prosecuted, can lead to severe consequences. In Pennsylvania, individuals found guilty of investment fraud face the possibility of both civil and criminal penalties. In a civil case, the injured party (investor) may be able to seek restitution, or repayment of their losses, from the guilty party. Depending on the case, a judge may also order the guilty party to pay punitive damages, or additional funds that are meant to punish the guilty party and dissuade them from committing similar crimes in the future. In a criminal case, the guilty party could be sentenced to prison time, fines, and/or probation. Depending on the circumstances, the guilty party may also be required to reimburse the victimized investor for the losses incurred. Additionally, the guilty party may have to forfeit any ill-gotten gains to the government. In addition to the legal consequences, the guilty party may also face significant reputational damage. If the case receives media attention, the guilty party could suffer harm to their professional and personal relationships. Investment fraud is a serious crime and it is important to understand the serious consequences that may result from it.
