What is the difference between political asylum and religious asylum?

Political asylum and religious asylum are both forms of immigration relief afforded to foreign nationals who are unable to safely remain in their home country due to either political or religious persecution. The primary difference between political asylum and religious asylum is the basis upon which the foreign national is seeking asylum. Political asylum is used to protect individuals who are persecuted by their own government, or are otherwise unable to live safely in their home country due to fears of racial, ethnic, political, or gender-based violence or oppression. To qualify for political asylum a person must be able to demonstrate persecution or fear of persecution due to their race, religion, gender, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Religious asylum is used to protect individuals who are persecuted due to their religious beliefs. To qualify for religious asylum an individual must be able to demonstrate a fear of persecution due to their religion, including persecution for practicing or changing their religion. It is important to note that religious asylum does not protect individuals who face persecution due to their political opinions. In Maryland, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is responsible for processing applications for both political asylum and religious asylum. Prospective applicants must provide USCIS with detailed evidence of their persecution, and must also be able to demonstrate the ability and willingness to resettle and become self-supporting in the U.S. if their application is approved.
