Where can I apply for asylum?

In South Carolina, asylum seekers can apply for protection through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To apply for asylum, individuals must complete and submit the Form I-589 Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal. This form can be completed online and submitted to one of the USCIS overseas offices or U.S. embassies. After the form has been completed, the asylum seeker must make an appointment for an asylum interview with the Office of Asylum of the USCIS. Asylum seekers are also required to bring several documents with them to the interview. This includes all available evidence and documentation that will demonstrate a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. These documents can include birth certificates, passports, police records, and medical records. At the asylum interview, the asylum seeker will be asked to provide a full, detailed explanation of their past persecution and why they fear returning to their home country. At the end of the interview, the asylum seeker will be told whether their asylum application has been approved or denied. If the application is approved, the asylum seeker will be granted refugee status in the United States.
