How long do I have to remain in the U.S. after getting asylum?
When you receive asylum in the United States, you become a lawful permanent resident. This means you are allowed to remain in the United States indefinitely, though you are still subject to the immigration laws of the United States. The amount of time you must remain in the United States after receiving asylum depends on your situation. Generally, you must remain in the United States for one year from the date your asylum status was granted in order to maintain your lawful permanent resident status. In Colorado specifically, there are certain requirements you must meet after being granted asylum: • You must remain physically present in the United States for at least six months after you receive asylum status. • You must prove that you are a person of good moral character. • You must either demonstrate that you have been employed for at least six months in the United States since you were granted asylum, or that you have taken steps to become a permanent resident of the United States. Once these requirements are met, you can continue to remain in the United States indefinitely. However, you must renew your green card every 10 years and you must remain in compliance with all other immigration laws.
