How can I obtain a work permit after getting asylum?

In South Carolina, if you have received asylum you may be eligible to apply for a work permit. A work permit is necessary for those who wish to be employed, as it is a form of authorization from the government proving that you are allowed to work in the United States. The first step to obtaining a work permit in South Carolina is to apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). You can apply for an EAD by filing Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Along with your completed application you must submit proof that you have been granted asylum (either a letter from USCIS or an I-94 card). You will also need to submit two passport-style photos of yourself as well as the applicable filing fee, currently $410. Once your application has been submitted, USCIS will review it and make a decision as to whether you are eligible for an EAD. If your application is approved, you will receive a letter from USCIS confirming your application has been approved and a document card (the EAD) will be issued to you. You will need to show this card to your employer in order to get hired. If you have any questions during the process, it is advised to contact the USCIS National Customer Service Center at (800) 375-5283 for more information.
