What is the difference between a “refugee” and an “asylee”?

The main difference between a refugee and an asylee is that a refugee is someone who is seeking protection outside of the United States, while an asylee is someone who is seeking protection in the United States. A refugee is someone who is fleeing their home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. In order for them to be recognized as a refugee, they must apply for this status in their country of origin or in a third country. A refugee is then granted permission to enter the United States and is issued a “green card”, allowing them to live and work in the United States. An asylee, on the other hand, is someone who is already in the United States, either legally or illegally, and is seeking protection from the government due to the same reasons a refugee would be. An asylee can be granted asylum if they can prove that they have been persecuted or fear persecution in their home country. Like a refugee, an asylee is also granted a green card and can live and work in the United States. In Ohio, an individual can apply for asylum either through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services or through the Executive Office of Immigration Review. Both processes involve filing the necessary paperwork, attending interviews, and participating in a hearing. If the individual is granted asylum, they can remain in the United States and eventually apply for permanent residency status.
